I think Doctor Zhivago works better as an exploration into one's moral responsibility, the role of art as a savior or it's capacity for immortalizing memories/names/events, and sacrifice rather than a period piece. I found And Quiet Flows the Don, War & Peace, and Life & Fate to be better examples of epics that capture the turbulence and details of ordinary lives during those periods

Agreed. I know War and Peace well, but have not read the other two titles you've mentioned. I'll get to them!
